Meet Jayden
Jadyn is a 15-year-old girl with a rare mitochondrial disease called Combined Oxidative Phosphorylation Deficiency 4 (COXPD4), caused by a mutation in the TUFM gene. Only ten other patients are documented with this condition. Mitochondrial diseases can impact nearly every organ, and in Jadyn's case, it affects her breathing, blood pressure, vision, brain, liver, and more. While there is no cure, supportive therapies, including a specialized "mito cocktail" of supplements, have helped keep Jadyn stable since she was diagnosed at age 7. These treatments are not covered by insurance, but they have allowed her to stay out of the hospital and continue her care at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
However, in the summer of 2024, after recovering from severe pneumonia and beginning high school, Jadyn’s health took a turn due to PTSD triggered by a traumatic school experience. This setback led her mother to seek additional mental health support. Traditional resources for children with medical complexities like Jadyn’s are scarce, but they discovered Dr. Rhiannon at Capital District Family Chiropractic, who specializes in nervous system chiropractic care for anxiety
While hopeful, the financial burden of out-of-network care was overwhelming. Jadyn's mother, a health home care manager, has been on leave to care for her daughter and is advocating for better support for families like theirs. Jadyn and her mother were recently featured in a local news story about a proposed bill (A9034/S8599) that would allow parents to serve as certified complex care assistants, helping children with medically complex needs stay at home with the support of nursing agencies.
Jadyn’s family is seeking community support to access neurological chiropractic care and to raise awareness for the bill that could significantly improve their lives. The family urges others to contact legislators to help pass this important legislation and to support their journey toward better health and quality of life.
Meet Levi
Born seven weeks early on February 9, 2022, after a car accident when his mother was eight months pregnant, Levi’s early arrival came with significant challenges. At just 2 ½ years old, Levi is still working on the basic skills many of us take for granted, like balancing and walking. He’s also learning to communicate, but still mostly babbles as he struggles with his speech. His parents face daily challenges, as they help Levi navigate his world. He receives speech, physical, and occupational therapy twice a week, and while there has been some progress—like small improvements in his balance and a few new words—Levi is still far from walking on his own or speaking clearly. Their ultimate goal is to help Levi find balance, walk independently, and communicate his needs. As parents, they are open to trying anything that could support Levi’s development, but they are uncertain about what neurological chiropractic care could offer. Though they are committed to finding the best treatments for their son, the financial burden has been a challenge. That’s why the opportunity to participate in the Gift of Health program would mean so much to them. It would not only provide Levi with the chance for more comprehensive care but also give his family a better understanding of how to support him as he continues to grow and face these challenges.
